A simple substance found on all kitchen shelves has a magical effect on their hair; above the long hair that averages 6 feet long, they usually don’t get grey hair until their 80s.

The beauty of that woman’s hair is a clear and indisputable fact, but we are always on our blog trying to find the scientific proof behind every curly hair trend.

As we know, many factors can affect hair health, like your diet, so let’s answer the question, what are rice water’s benefits for curly hair?.

Is rice water scientifically proven as a hair treatment?

Many research proves that rice contains many vitamins, minerals, and natural antioxidants like B vitamins, E vitamin, Zinck, and protein -amino acid. Still, the main question we have to ask is Can hair benefit from these substances? 

Rice water for hair growth

Despite all the advice of YouTubers and curly hair influencers to use rice water to increase hair growth, there isn’t any scientific research to prove that advice, except one historical research about the link between Japanese women’s hair length and the use of rice water. 

This research is not enough to depend on it. Because it focuses on the relation between using rice water and Japanese women’s hair length without providing a clear scientific reason why rice water is effective in hair growth, it also ignores the other factors that have a major role in hair growth, like genetics.

Rice water for hair loss 

No, rice water doesn’t reduce hair loss, this is another myth that is popular on social media, but scientifically it’s not proven.

In general, hair loss is a normal case, but sometimes you can face health issues that increase hair loss.

In this case, you shouldn’t ever follow any hair influencer to treat your hair problem, just go ahead and ask a specialist doctor to give you the right and suitable solution for your case. 

Rice water as a curly hair protein treatment 

According to the research, rice contains a moderate amount of protein with a full complement of amino acids -which are the structural units (monomers) that make up proteins-. But when it comes to rice water benefits as a protein treatment for curly hair, I didn’t find any research about that.

However, we can find large hydrolyzed protein in rice; unfortunately, it can’t penetrate hair cuticles easily.

How to make rice water for curly hair?

There are many ways to make rice water, but there is no evidence that one of them is the best, so try them all and rely on the result to determine which works best for you. 

Soaked rice water

  • One cup of uncooked rice.
  • Rinse thoroughly to get rid of the dirt and dust in the rice.
  • Put the rice in a bowl, then add 2-3 cups of filtered water.
  • Leave for 30 minutes.
  • Strain the rice water into a clean bowl, and now you can use it on your hair.

Fermented rice water

  • One cup of uncooked rice.
  • Rinse thoroughly to get rid of the dirt and dust in the rice.
  • Put the rice in a bowl, then add 2-3 cups of filtered water.
  • Leave the rice water at room temperature for up to two days.
  • Strain the rice water into a clean bowl, and now you can use it on your hair.

Boiling rice water

  • ½ cup of rice
  • adds one glass of water.
  • Cook the rice in boiling water.
  • Strain the rice water into a clean bowl, and now you can use it on your hair.

Note: there is a study that refers to the high amount of antioxidants in fermented rice water compared with soaking rice water. 

What are the benefits of rice water for curly hair?

Depending on what many curly girls experience, their hair gets better after applying rice water to it. That’s maybe because of the high percentage of starch in rice, which is up to 80%, the starch fills the hair cuticle and gives it strength besides its hydration effect. So you may give it a try to get the following benefits:

  • Make the hair stronger, and reduce hair breakage.

How often should you use rice water?

You can use rice water once a week or once a mince or once every 6-8 weeks; it all depends on your hair needs and your hair’s response to it.

Is there any side effect of rice water on curly hair?

As I mentioned, rice water contains large hydrolyzed protein, which is difficult to penetrate to the hair and makes it possible for hair to experience protein build-up, especially if your curly hair is fine or low in porosity.

Above that, the scratch in rice water may increase curly hair dryness and dry out the scalp, so it’s better to use deep conditioning after using rice water to get a better result
